I stayed at Art Like Rooms in Zagreb, Croatia. I booked online at the rate of €38.50 per night, and I booked it for its price and location in Zagreb. I had been in Zagreb before, but I didn’t remember any area as being particularly advantageous to stay in. Zagreb has a compact city centre, so it is easy enough to walk around.
The main reception is above a Spar supermarket. I checked in and was informed that my room was a few minutes walk down the road.

My room was in a residential apartment building that didn’t advertise any apartment rental on the outside. Apartment accommodation is common in Croatia, and you will find that most of the cheap private rooms on hotel booking sites list this type of accommodation.

This particular accommodation rental appeared to be a larger apartment that has been subdivided into smaller units. Upon entering the apartment there was a common hallway with numbered doors for each subdivision.
I got a double room with a private bathroom. The bed was comfortable, and my room was facing the street so there was plenty of natural light.
The room had a little desk and chair that was suitable for a workspace should you need it. There was also a kettle with tea and coffee facilities. There is free wifi here, and I got a good reception in my room.

The bathroom was compact and everything was clean and in good order. The shower had a good hot water system as well.
As a Melburnian, I enjoyed the sound of trams outside my window. The windows have blinds that could be drawn down for darkness.

The is also a bigger Spar supermarket opposite this block of flats, and there are lots of bakeries nearby for breakfast. The apartment is in an area known as the Design District. I didn’t know this when I booked the room, so the area turned out to be a good choice to stay in. There are some good cafes and restaurants in the area, and it is close enough to walk to the main city square. The apartment is about 17 minutes walk to the main train station (according to my Google Msps).

To check out I just left the keys in the room, so there was no need to go back to the main reception building.
Overall this was a good place to stay in Zagreb if you are looking for a budget private room. Book Art Like Rooms online or search for more hotels in Zagreb.

The staff in the restaurant is very friendly and educated and the blonde girl at the reception is very professional and helpful. BUT the nightmare started in the 3rd floor (I was sleeping in room #306) The person sleeping in the room #307 (which i did noticed it was a staff member) was KICKING/BANGING MY DOOR yesterday (sunday around 10 in the morning) after walking in the corridor screaming and hitting the walls in a very violent way. I called the reception so they could send somebody (or call the police) to the 3rd floor, the nice girl at the reception went upstairs and didn´t see anything (she was the person telling me that one staff member was sleeping at room #307). So we wait... Around 22:00 (10:00 pm) the same person from room #307 was having lots of people in and out of his room and at some point he/they started to kick my door again (really creepy since I didn´t know if they are crazy or psychopaths...), I did call the reception and a very nice guy came upp and told me he will check the cameras, to lock my door and to call him if I needed help (not really the way you want/can sleep at your hotel room). This person had the whole night people coming in and out of his room( #307)and started to scream around 03:00 in the morning and then walking around the corridor and moving the furniture in his room (this person was behaving in a really creepy and violent way...) I did not sleep that night. I did move to another hotel the next morning, didn´t get my money back and didn´t get any response from the person working that day. Anyway, AVOID this hostel, seems a bit dangerous (LOTS of drunk people walking around the hotel), the smell of cigarettes around the whole building is just sickening. Staff member living in the hotel and getting drunk (and violent) at night (and in the mornings...) BUT, as I said, the staff in the bar downstairs are very friendly and helpful. PLEASE, if you are traveling with kids/family/couple DON´T STAY HERE! As I said before, I travel A LOT (about 150 hotels nights at year) and this is the only time I felt scared and really wanted to run away because of the drunkness and violence around this hotel (I did hear at my new hotel about the reputation that Timeout Heritage Hotel has in Zagreb...) Thank you!
Hotel Esplanade Zagreb In Zagreb, Croatia From $87: Deals, Reviews, Photos
The breakfast is simple but more attentive, and the location is excellent. The front entrance of the hotel is the commercial center, and the back entrance is not more than 5 minutes' walk up the mountain to reach the old town. There is a free parking lot, and the service is superb, helping iron the clothes for free. Great choice in Zagreb.
What began as a suspiciously underpriced, gorgeously designed, epicentrically located property with heart and smiles for days...turned into a psychotic, abusive nightmare, like something straight out of Rosemary’s Baby. Never in all my days, in all the hundreds of properties and thousands of nights in everything from backpacker hostels to five-star suites, have I been subjected not simply to bad service (fixable) but outright and unrepentant hostility, harassment and torment by the staff. Unbelievable. As the gentleman and professional many know me to be, I in good faith detailed the infractions, called for a GM meeting, recommended simple solutions, had multiple follow-up meetings, and presumed the offending micro-tyrants would be disciplined and neutralized. They weren’t. It only got worse. And worse still. Think, stalking, door slamming, man-handling my iPad (verboten), shorting guest change when paying by cash in the bar (witnessed multiple times), having aggressive security called for eating in an otherwise public area five minutes beyond a theretofore unknown “rule, ” asking me repeated and pointedly “how long I would be staying...” you get the idea. So, in the end, I cancelled two weeks of reservations (which would have been expanded to 6+) and protested with my feet. I left. A day out and I STILL feel emotionally winded, unsure of what I just witnessed. All I know is that if my behavior to a client or guest even approached this, I’d be – and should be – terminated on the spot. This was not the decision of management. But maybe it’s me. Maybe this is Croatia’s version of adventure travel. Not enough to make me fall out of love with Zagreb...but close. Interesting world.
